The Singaporeans in Sing China 2017
Update July 2018: Check out our latest updates on Sing! China 2018
Sing China (formerly known as The Voice of China) is a popular televised singing competition. Last year, we saw our very own Nathan Hartono become the first Singaporean to make it past the blind auditions, reach the grand finals, and walk away as the runner-up. The competition has definitely propelled him to local and regional stardom.
In this year’s competition, we saw not one but a total of four Singapore representatives make it through the blind auditions, and so aptly just before Singapore’s 52nd national day! Let’s zoom in on the 4 ladies that made it through this prestigious competition.
Joanna Dong (董姿彦)
Mentors that wanted her: Eason Chen, Liu Huan and Jay Chou
Selected Mentor: Jay Chou
Audition Piece: 恋曲1990
Joanna Dong is quite a prominent singer in the Singapore Jazz scene. Years before her Sing China success, she joined Singapore Idol – a competition which she did not find much success in. But look at the transformation she went through, from being criticised by the likes of Ken Lim and Dick Lee to being praised and affirmed by Mando-pop superstars, Jay Chou and Eason Chen!

Curley Gao (希林娜依·高)
Mentors that wanted her: Na Ying and Eason Chen
Selected Mentor: Na Ying
Audition Piece: 无与伦比的美丽
Technically, Curley isn’t a Singaporean but she has been studying in Singapore for the last 9 years and in her introduction to the mentors, she casually mentioned she speaks Singlish! At only 18 years of age, she still has the potential to improve drastically, something which her mentor Na Ying will be making sure of.

Olinda Cho (卓猷燕)
Mentors that wanted her: Eason Chen, Na Ying and Jay Chou
Selected Mentor: Jay Chou
Audition Piece: 不能说的秘密
Probably the most familiar face among the 4 Singaporean contestants in Sing China, Olinda Cho first rose to fame in Singapore Idol 2004, where she was the second runner-up in the competition. Another thing to note was she actually participated in last year’s competition but never made it through the blind auditions. This time around, she finally made it through and what better way to do it then auditioning with one of Jay Chou’s most popular ballads “不能说的秘密” and being recruited by the man himself!

Stella Seah (谢惠娴)
Mentors that wanted her: Eason Chen and Na Ying
Selected Mentor: Na Ying
Audition Piece: 我是一只鱼
Stella Seah first rose to prominence when she took part in the second season of Campus SuperStar and emerged 3rd in the Female Category. Currently, Stella Seah plys her trade as a wedding singer, and according to her introduction to the mentors, she has already performed in well over 200 weddings thus far. Stella is currently an artist under indie asian music and entertainment company Ocean Butterflies International.

Our Prediction: Who will make it the furthest in the competition?
Although Sing China is primarily a singing competition, an overall package is important. Having a good voice is key but the marketability of the contestant is very important as well. So in this light, the contestant which we predict will go the furthest is Stella Seah.
Without a doubt, all 4 contestants possess a great voice but if were to look at them holistically, Stella Seah would probably have the complete package. For starters, she’s the only contestant who is currently signed to a record label, which simply means she is already being groomed to become a mainstream singer in the Mando-pop scene.
With such exposure under her belt and with the tutelage of Na Ying, one of the most dedicated mentors in the history of the competition. She’s our pick to go the furthest in this year’s Sing China. Who do you think would go furthest in this competition? Let us know in the comments below!
